Vivian Maier - Photographer Research

Vivian Maier - Photographer Research

Vivian Dorothy Maier was an American street photographer. Maier worked for about forty years as a nanny, mostly in Chicago's North Shore, pursuing photography during her spare time. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide.

I really like this image by Vivian Maier who was a documentary photographer that took photos based around what she saw on the streets of big cities in America. This particular image was taken on May 6th, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois. It appears that the lady in the photograph is sitting on a bench dressed very nicely with her hair and make-up done. This could suggest that she is waiting to be taken to a special event which is why she appears the way she does. It is obvious from the photo that the lady is aware of the camera but seems to keep a very natural expression on her face, he facial expression and body language make her look very at ease in front of the camera and very gentle. The lady looks very feminine but at the same time powerful like she is quite important. I really live the closeness of this photo and how the camera has picked up her very mood and every detail. When looking at the photo it is very intense and intimate as the closeness you feel is much more that you would seeing a stranger in real life, you wouldn't get this kind of impression from them.

This image by Vivian Maier was taken on April 7, 1960 in Florida. The image is from the collection 'Street 1' the first portfolio in the series of 5 streets. I find this image very intriguing and it captured my eye as soon as I saw it. The image is beautiful, powerful and has so much meaning, it tells a story just from the one moment of many pictured before us. It shows two elderly people on a bus, the lady resting her head on the mans shoulder whilst they both sleep, whilst this could be seen as a very normal moment it makes me think of the many years this couple may have spent together and the trust they have built with each other to be this comfortable in the others company in public. The image makes me smile and think about how powerful love is to keep two people together this close for what appears to be many years. This is one thing I love about Vivian Maiers work, she manages to show happiness and a story from one moment.

The photograph above was taken on May 5th, 1955. It was taken on the streets of New York where Vivian Maier spent most of her time photographing everyday scenes. The image above has a positive feel to it that makes the viewer smile as the little boy is adorable. Vivian worked with children therefore when taking photos of them knew exactly what to look for in order to make the image as effective as possible. The photo shows the little boy pressing his nose against the glass of a window and looking directly at the camera with a curious look on his face. The curiosity we can see on his face may be a reaction to the camera Vivian had pointing at him as he would have been wondering what she was doing. The same goes for his face pressed up against the glass as he appears to be getting as close as he can to the outside to see what she is doing. The overall image is very captivating because of the framing and simplicity of it, the boy being the only subject and the window simply framing him.

Image 4

This photo by Vivian Maier was taken in Canada but doesn't have a date, the reason for this could be because many of her photographs weren't developed when she was alive instead they were discovered in a storage unit shortly after she died therefore there might not be much information about them. The image above shows two small girls looking very happy playing with a skipping rope in the street. Both girls are wearing dresses and pretty coats true to the style of the 50's and 60's showing some indication of the decade this is from. I really like this image as you cannot look at it without smiling, it s really positive and show how children can have fun and enjoy themselves with something as simple as a skipping rope. The image is very skillful i having the two young girls in perfect focus whilst they still appear to be in motion but the skipping rope blurred as it moves over their heads. This image has imperfections but showing how some moments aren't perfect but still are good and very important.

Influence - Vivian Maier's wok has influenced me in my own shoots because I really like the style she uses in her photographs by using different perspectives, using blur to her advantage and the framing they give the image a striking effect. I also really enjoy how her images tell a story fro just capturing one moment, this is what I aimed to do in my own images. By taking pictures of moments between people and showing the relationships between them or my dog I managed to tell small stories about what was going on from a small fraction of the time. I think despite Vivian Maiers images being of strangers on the street they still seem very personal not distant as she spent so much time observing she got to understand people at first glance.
